Biography
Marcus Thompson is a seasoned commercial litigator with a track record of favorable outcomes in high-stakes business disputes. With over 18 years of experience, he has tried cases in state and federal courts throughout Illinois and has successfully argued before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
Marcus joined Sterling & Associates in 2012 after spending a decade at one of Chicago's premier litigation boutiques. His practice focuses on complex commercial disputes including breach of contract, partnership and shareholder disputes, trade secret misappropriation, fraud claims, and business tort litigation. He also handles international commercial arbitration proceedings.
What distinguishes Marcus's practice is his understanding that litigation is a business tool, not an end in itself. He works closely with clients to develop litigation strategies that align with their commercial objectives, whether that means pursuing aggressive motion practice to achieve early resolution, leveraging discovery to strengthen negotiating position, or taking a case to trial when the stakes demand it.
Marcus has particular expertise in representing companies in partnership dissolution and shareholder oppression matters, where his ability to navigate both the legal complexities and interpersonal dynamics of closely held business disputes is especially valuable. He also leads the firm's alternative dispute resolution practice, serving as a mediator and arbitrator in commercial cases.
He is an active member of the legal community, serving on the board of the Chicago Inn of Court and mentoring young attorneys through the Chicago Bar Foundation's Fellows Program.
